The statement
This portal is a theoretical academic reference on mathematical statistics and probability theory. It is not affiliated with any standards body or institution. No files, datasets or products are distributed or hosted. For educational and scientific study only; no advisory or consulting services are provided
The paragraphs below expand the statement above and explain what it means in practice. They are not a substitute for the statement itself, which stands on its own.
A theoretical reference
Every page of this site is an essay on mathematical statistics, probability and stochastic series. The purpose is understanding: to explain why a result is true, how the argument is arranged and what the conditions of the result are. The reference does not seek to be a handbook for any particular line of work, and it makes no pretence of being one.
No affiliation
The editorial desk is independent. It holds no affiliation with any standards body, laboratory, university, professional association or commercial concern, and it receives no direction from any of them. Any resemblance between the arrangement of these pages and the practice of some institution is coincidental, and no endorsement is claimed or implied in either direction.
Nothing distributed
The reference distributes and hosts nothing but its own text and diagrams. It offers no files, no datasets and no products of any kind. There is nothing to obtain from these pages beyond the reading itself, and a reader who arrives expecting a resource to collect will leave disappointed, though not, the desk hopes, empty handed in the matter of ideas.
Study only
The reference exists for educational and scientific study. It is written for students and researchers who wish to understand the theory, and it should be read in that spirit. Nothing here is intended to inform a decision in any particular setting, and the desk takes no view on how the ideas might be used elsewhere.
No advisory or consulting service
The desk does not provide advice, and it does not consult. It cannot review a study, cannot recommend a procedure, and cannot answer a question that turns on the facts of a particular case. The contact page exists for corrections and for correspondence about the reference itself, and messages that ask for advice are answered politely but declined.
Accuracy and revisions
The desk takes care to be accurate, and it corrects errors when they are found. It does not, however, promise that every page is without mistake. A reader who relies on a statement in these pages does so on their own responsibility, and a reader who suspects an error is warmly invited to report it so that the next revision may put it right. The related pages are the Terms of Use and the
Reading the legal pages together
The disclaimer, the terms, the privacy notice, the cookie policy and the accessibility statement form a single short family of pages. None of them is long, and none of them hides an obligation in fine print. The desk prefers that a reader who cares about these matters can settle them in a few minutes and return to the mathematics, which is where the value of the reference lies. If a question remains after reading them, the contact page is open, and the desk will answer it directly.
